Occupational Therapy: Building Bridges to Independence

Empowering Abilities: A Tribute to OT Professionals

OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY MONTH

Every April, the medical community celebrates Occupational Therapy (OT) Month in the United States. This month is dedicated to honoring the dedicated professionals who work tirelessly to improve the lives of their clients and families. Occupational therapy is a vital profession that helps people of all ages live to the fullest despite physical, mental, or cognitive limitations.

WHAT IS OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY?

Occupational Therapy is a client-centered health profession in which therapists work with individuals, families, organizations, and communities to promote health and well-being through meaningful activities.

Occupational Therapy can benefit individuals of all ages, from children with developmental delays to seniors with injuries or chronic conditions. Occupational Therapists are trained to assess patient needs and develop a customized treatment plan to help individuals reach their goals.

Did you know occupational therapy can be traced back to ancient Greece, where work was considered therapeutic? It wasn't until the 20th century that occupational therapy became a formal profession.

OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY vs. PHYSICAL THERAPY

Occupational therapy focuses on activities of daily living, such as work and self-care. Physical therapy works on physical impairments such as mobility and flexibility. The two therapies often overlap, and an occupational therapist may also incorporate physical therapy into their treatment plan.

Occupational therapy was founded by three men and three women in 1917; equality three years before women could vote.

WHAT INTERVENTIONS DO OT'S PROVIDE

-Physical Exercises
